How to Nail Your Mountain Engagement Photoshoot

Couple has their last dance of the evening in the mountains as the sun sets.

If you love to run away to the mountains, then planning your engagement photoshoot in them is a natural fit. Julia and Jonas didn’t mind winding drive to get to the epic Mt. Falcon West Trailhead. It sits in the Indian Hills neighborhood and is a favorite among many of my couples. I’ll go over a few things to keep in mind if this type of session is your gig.

Choosing the Right Location

All over the front range are incredible locations for doing an engagement photoshoot. But one of the biggest things to keep in mind is drive time. It needs to be relatively accessible, easy to walk, and have epic backgrounds. What I love about this trailhead is that it’s less than an hour from Denver and the views are only steps away from the parking lot. That makes it nice for anyone wearing heels or more formal shoes. However, be sure to pack an extra pair of boots in case it’s muddy.
There are a couple really great spots on the trail. The open space near the bathrooms provide perfect mountain views. If you continue on the trail nearby, that’s where you’ll find the location above.

Timing is Everything

Something to consider when heading to the mountains for a photoshoot, is how quickly the sun sets. I typically plan all my sessions within the two hours before sunset. In the mountains however, this happens a little earlier because of the tall peaks. Be sure to allow for enough time to get that gorgeous glow before it’s too late. It happens fast!

What To Wear

Wondering what to wear or how many outfits to plan? I can tell you from years of doing this that neutrals will be your best friend every time. Photos are always more timeless and classic when outfits are neutral. Does that mean you can’t have patterns or color? Nonsense! Feel free to throw in both. Just keep it to one or two pieces so it isn’t too busy and distracting.

Dressed up versus casual: that’s really a matter of preference. I recommend sticking to business casual or formal. A flowing dress or suit jacket without a tie look really sharp without feeling stuffy. As with Julia and Jonas, they paired denim with boots and blouses and it worked beautifully!

If you have at least an hour, two outfits is sufficient. Up to two hours and you could likely have time for three. If you’re not sure then bring choices and see what the time allows!

Enjoy Each Other

You won’t get these moments back so have fun! An engagement photoshoot is a great time to play, laugh, and kiss slowly. Movement creates stunning, authentic portraits that are far from boring. It’s about the two of you, your story, so the more you can let down and have fun, the more you’ll love your portraits. Snuggle up, chase each other, and take advantage of one of the best times in your life.
